At Soul HeARTful, our HeARTful Palette Art Psychotherapy program offers more than just art — it offers a safe, nurturing space for children and youth to explore their emotions, build resilience, and begin healing through creative expression.
One of the children we’ve journeyed with is L, a spirited 11-year-old with layers of untold stories behind his confident smile.
11 often came across as cheeky and outspoken — traits many admired. But beneath that surface were unspoken frustrations and emotional wounds stemming from a challenging home environment and complex relationships with adult figures in his life. He carried a strong sense of injustice and often struggled to express himself in ways that felt safe or heard.
Through the HeARTful Palette program, L was introduced to art as a language beyond words — one that gave him control, freedom, and understanding.
In one session, he built a volcano out of clay, expressing that emotions, when not released properly, could “explode and hurt someone.” That moment wasn’t just symbolic — it was transformative. It showed us how deeply aware he was of his emotional world, and how much he wanted to learn to regulate it. We built on this awareness through strategies, visual metaphors, and positive reinforcement.
Another session, L created a vibrant, chaotic artwork he later titled "Something I Did Not Expect." With thick smears of black, green, red, and glimmers of yellow, this piece powerfully mirrored his internal world:
🖤 Black — shielding his pain, overwhelming thoughts, and need to protect himself.💚 Green — a glimmer of growth and calmness trying to break through.❤️ Red — unfiltered anger, frustration, and a loud cry for help.💛 Yellow — flickers of hope and his hidden wish to be loved and understood.
That day, L didn’t want to talk. But when offered paint, he smiled and said, “I want a little bit of everything — that’s how I feel today.” His silence spoke volumes, as he smeared paint across the canvas with both hesitation and intensity, capturing a complex storm of emotions. After the smearing, he quietly stared at the canvas and whispered the name of his work.
In another session, he channeled his emotions into drawing comic heroes — figures of power and resilience. Through these, he slowly began to map out the people he felt safe with. It was through this imaginative lens that he began establishing his support system, showing us who he felt were his protectors, his companions, and sometimes… even his villains.
L's sessions also reflected the real-life challenges he faces: incidents of aggression at school, fear of not being loved, and internal conflict about his relationship with a caregiver. His art — a volcano, a tank, a comic, a smear — became emotional blueprints of his inner battle between fear, strength, and a longing for connection.
💬 He once said: “Some mothers don’t love their children.”A painful belief… but also a question. Am I lovable even when I make mistakes?
Our work with L is ongoing — week by week, line by line, layer by layer. We’re helping him learn that:
His feelings are safe here.
His voice matters — even when it shakes.
Love isn’t earned. It’s given.
Each week, L continued to show up. Whether it was creating a a volcano or creating comic strip, he was unknowingly planting seeds of growth within himself — recognising his capacity for kindness, beginning to identify his strengths, and finding healthier ways to cope with anger and confusion.
At Soul HeARTful, we don’t just see a child — we see a story waiting to be understood, a voice waiting to be heard, and a heart longing to be held with care.
L is just one of many children we walk alongside through HeARTful Palette. And with each child, we are reminded:✨ Healing doesn't always begin with words — sometimes, it begins with a brushstroke, a clay volcano, or a quiet moment of art-making.
