Unleashing Potential Through Art: A Journey of Transformation

Meet J, a gentle 13-year-old boy on the autism spectrum. When he first joined our Art Psychotherapy program at Soul HeARTful, he struggled with fear of failure, low confidence, and an inability to express emotions. School was a constant challenge—J often froze during exams, refusing to shade answers on his OAS paper out of fear of making mistakes. At home, he kept his feelings bottled up, having grown up in an environment where showing emotions was discouraged.

Breaking Barriers with Art Therapy

Unlike traditional therapy, which relies heavily on verbal expression, our art psychotherapy approach gave J a safe space to process his thoughts and emotions visually. In his first session, he hesitated to engage, stating that he "didn’t like art." Instead of forcing him, we encouraged J to choose his own way of creating—whether through storytelling, movement-based activities, or structured art exercises.

One of the most impactful sessions for J was the "Caring Hands" Art Therapy Activity, which helped him visually explore the way he gives and receives care.

Left Hand, Right Hand: Exploring Care and Connection

We guided J through an art-based reflective exercise where he traced both his hands on paper.

🖐 Right Hand (Giving Care) – J was asked to write or draw ways he shows care for others.✋ Left Hand (Receiving Care) – J was asked to identify ways others show care for him.

At first, J found it much easier to list the ways he helps others—he mentioned:✅ Helping his mother with house chores.✅ Keeping his toys tidy.✅ Reminding himself to complete his homework.

However, when it came to recognizing how others cared for him, he struggled. After much reflection, the only thing he could identify was that his mother takes him out for dinner. He felt that every instruction was a scolding session. This highlighted a deep disconnect—J was unable to recognize love and support in his life, even when it was there.

Bridging the Emotional Gap

By validating J’s emotions and guiding him through reflection, we helped him understand that care comes in many forms—sometimes in words, sometimes in actions, and sometimes in small everyday moments. I shared with his parents some effective communication methods that can help in improving their relationship.

The Breakthrough

This session opened the door for J to begin recognizing and accepting support, which, in turn, helped him develop a stronger sense of motivation. It planted the seeds for self-worth, allowing him to gradually shift his perspective from "I’m alone" to "There are people who care about me." From then his parents shared with me that he began asking for more hugs and began to communicated more about his feelings.

The Next Session

One session, J was asked to create a “Tree of Growth”, representing his strengths, support system, and goals. Initially, he struggled to identify his own strengths, only managing to write one: "telling jokes." However, with encouragement, sharing more and he gradually began recognizing the support he had around him and the future he wanted for himself.

In another session, J participated in a bubble shading activity, designed to help him overcome his fear of making mistakes. By integrating fun and engaging "Yes/No/Maybe" trivia questions into the exercise, he began shading the answers without hesitation—a small yet significant step towards overcoming his exam anxiety.

A Brighter Future Ahead

By his third session, J’s parents noticed an improvement in his attitude and engagement. They shared that he was now:✅ More willing to complete his work without giving up.✅ Showing greater confidence in tackling academic tasks.

Most importantly, J began to see that his worth by his ability to keep trying.
