Yesterday, a teenage client and I explored what makes a family strong from a child's perspective. We began with a simple question: āWhat makes a tree stand tall?ā
Just like a tree needs deep roots and sturdy branches, a family needs love, care, and understanding. He shared his thoughts about how his mom helps keep their āfamily treeā strong, and then we brought that idea to life through art.
Hereās how we engaged him:
We invited him to choose branches to represent the support and effort his mom provides. He selected leaves for the kind things sheās done.
And he picked special charms to symbolize the values and memories she bringsālove, faith, and warmth.
Throughout the session, he was fully immersedācarefully handling each material, making thoughtful choices, and sharing his stories as he worked. By the end, he proudly added a āKindness Fruitāāa promise of one thing heāll do this week to make his mom smile.
Ā Activities like this help children practice gratitude, empathy, and symbolic thinking in a safe and creative way. More than just art, itās about helping them see and express the love they feel in ways that words alone sometimes canāt capture.
