When K first joined us, she bravely shared that speaking about her family felt nearly impossible. With a history of deep trauma rooted in her family relationships, even the idea of creating a traditional family tree felt overwhelming. She told us, “I don’t think I can do it… I’ll probably freeze up halfway.”
So, we offered an alternative: a collage genogram. Instead of rigid boxes or direct confrontation, we used textures, symbols, and space to allow the story to unfold organically.
At first, she was hesitant. But slowly, K began choosing materials—charms, torn paper, yarn—each one carrying a piece of her journey. She chose a golden wing as a symbol of someone who had shielded her. She also chose a sailboat as a symbol of freedom. She also included a paw print for her furry friend, who is always there to comfort her. The two birds in the ring symbolize the connection she yearns for with a specific individual. The light represents her willingness to try and find hope.
Later, she reflected, “This was… therapeutic, no stress. I didn’t have to talk so much. It wasn’t like someone just staring at me, waiting for me to explain everything. I could just create.”
At Soul HeARTful, we believe healing doesn’t always begin with words. Sometimes, it begins with colours, texture, and the courage to try.
